If you’ve read my blogs this year you may have picked up on my gripes with retailers and the high street not getting their Epos systems integrated for mobile transactions and coupons. But I’m moving on, and I’m going to be positive before the year ends…with restaurants and food!
I understand that customer dwell time at the till in a supermarket is super important to them. In a restaurant it isn’t. Most pay by card at the table with a chip and pin machine while finishing with a coffee – all very relaxed.
Also, sending a 19 digit code as a coupon is easy peasy – send it by email, social or a simple text. There are people that can do this for you and it can be validated through the chip and pin in a second and made sure it isn’t used again. Usually this is a fiddly process and not great if there’s a queue of people behind you in the shop. But if you’re in Pizza Express and it gets you a free garlic bread, why not?
There are a lot of hurdles with open loop coupons redeemed by a mobile but finally, in the last week of the year I cant think of one here: Pizza Express send out coupon codes (no need for scanning) through a social network (no need for all the mobile numbers). The customer then spreads the words on their Facebook page. Now I know this isn’t new and has been done before, probably by Pizza Express. But why isn’t it happening more? The fact that it’s at risk of over redemption shouldn’t put people off. As it happens I know of somebody that could take care of the over redemption risk for you….
Here to food and drink coupons in the New Year. Have a great Christmas.
